Not Sure What An SR-22 Is? Find Out More Here

For most people, the SR-22 is something they have never even heard of before. Others have heard about it in passing because a friend needed one, but they don't really understand its role in car insurance. In reality, very few people know what this is and why they would even need one. This is actually a good thing. It means you are driving responsibly and obeying the law. Just in case you ever do find yourself needing an SR-22, here are some things you need to know about it.

Understanding What an SR-22 is

An SR-22 is also referred to as a Certificate of Financial Responsibility. Contrary to what you might have been told, this isn't a type of insurance. It is simply a verification that you have proper insurance coverage in place. The state requires this form to be filed with the DMV by your insurance carrier.

Reasons You Need an SR-22

An SR-22 isn't something that everyone has to file. You are only required to have this certificate on file is if you were involved in an accident or other traffic offense where you weren't able to show that you had the proper insurance in effect. One of the most common examples of why you would need to have this form is because you were caught operating your vehicle without any insurance on it.

However, you might also have to file this form if you were convicted of a DWI, DUI, or other moving violation, driving on a suspended or revoked license, responsible for an accident where you didn't have insurance on your vehicle and convicted or multiple offenses within a short time period.

Getting an SR-22

For you to get a cheap SR-22 insurance, you will have to go through your insurance carrier. The only insurance companies that can get you this form are ones that are on file with the state. Just because you might have an SR-22 in place in Michigan, that doesn't mean it is going to carry over with you when you go to Florida. You will need to get another one in your new state of residence. The requirements from one state to another are going to vary, so make sure and check with your insurance provider as to what you need to remain in compliance with the law.

Take the time to discuss what you need to do with your insurance carrier when getting your new policy.
